Medical Center for Pregnant Women and New-born Babies has been completed and put into use. Jiulong Hospital with an investment of 500 million yuan and over 600 beds is the first of its kind invested by overseas Chinese and its construction already started. 90% of blood in clinical use is from donation. A lab for bone marrow matching has been completed. By the end of 2003 there were 1,436 medical institutions, of which 205 are hospitals and clinics. The number of professional medical staff is 24,800, of which 10,300 are doctors. There are 20,000 beds within these medical institutions. The Healthy City Program has been launched. Suzhou has become the member city of Healthy City Association of WTO.

The construction framework of the”Sports Circle Surrounding Taihu Lake?has taken shape and seven outdoor bodybuilding facilities represented by the Mercury Yacht Club were established, in addition,foundation was laid for Suzhou Taihu Lake Sports Recreational Park. Suzhou Sports Center has hosted the PLA Women Basketball Team's after-season home matches, Women's Weight-Lifting Competition of National City Sports Meet, National Women's Volleyball Championship, National Speed Skating Championship, National Synchronized Swimming Championship etc.And PLA Man's Volleyball Team and Qingdao Aucma Football Club had chosen it as their home ground. Yiping Su, the international top-notch athlete of Changshu native, won the gold medal for women's 100m hurdles in Asian Track and Field Tournament, five teams of Suzhou obtained four champions at national level.
