Zhangjiagang City has an area of 998.48 km 2 and a population of 860,000; it administers 8 subordinated townships and Zhangjiagang Port, the largest international port along the Yangtze River. Also here is the Zhangjiagang Bonded Area.

GDP of 2003 is 47.5 billion yuan (GDP per capita is over 6,700 USD), the local budget revenue registered 2.46 billion yuan. It ranks the 3 rd among the top 100 counties (cities) in China with advanced comprehensive development indices; 6 pillar industries, namely metallurgical, textile, machinery, foodstuff, chemical and construction material industries, have taken shape. Up to the end of 2003, total contractual foreign investment is 6.20 billion USD, utilized foreign investment is 3.65 billion USD, and the number of foreign-invested companies is 1251. Total import and export volume of 2003 is 5.125 billion USD.

Renowned as National Model City for Environment Protection, National Hygienic City, National Garden City, National and Model City for Mutual Support between the Army and the People, Zhangjiagang City also won the Award of Living Environment Model of China. It successfully passed the trial test for National Civilization City and the examination for National Ecological Sample Region. In addition, it is among the first group to win the title of Good Public Security County (City) of Jiangsu Province.
