Xingfu Temple Pagoda is located inside the Square Pagoda Park, Eastern Gate, Ancient City Area, Changshu city, Jiangsu Province, China. It was listed as a national key cultural relics protection site in 2006.
The pagoda is originally named Chong Pagoda and commonly known as the Square Pagoda. On the fourth year of the Reign of Jianyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1130), the base for the temple was built. During the Reign of Xianchun (1265-1274), Monk Fa Yuan demolished the original pagoda and reconstructed it into a nine story structure. On the eighth year of Reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty (1375), Monk Jinghui rebuilt it, and completed eight years later. During 1998 to 1999, an overhaul was implemented, eradicating damages in angle beams, Dougong, balconies, sinking and dislocation of railings, cracking of brick walls and others at each level.
It is a nine-storeyed Square Pagoda; its body built of brick and pent roofs of wood, pavilion type. The inner space of the pagoda is a vertically erected shuttle. From bottom to top, the story height reduced and so was the width, thus the outline is shrinking obviously. The pagoda is 67.14 meters high, every story being wide and deep for 3 rooms. Although repeatedly repaired during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it has retained the style of the Song Dynasty in terms of wooden members and the tower body dimension. It provides a good example to reveal the evolution of the beam construction development of the ancient buildings in the south of the Yangtze River in the transitional period.
