Jade Swallow Hall is located in Beishi Street, Zhouzhuang Town, Kunshan City. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China in 2013.
It is said that the Garden was built during Zhengtong Years of the Ming Dynasty by the descendant of Xu Kui, younger brother of Xu Da who was the King of Zhongshan in the early years of the Ming Dynasty, and the first name was Yishun Garden. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was owned by Zhang family and was renamed Jade Swallow Garden, and the common name was Zhang’s Mansion. The east-facing old mansion was built along a street and faced with a river, covering an area of 1,884 square meters, and there were 70 rooms in 5 yards along the central axis. The first two halls were entrance hall and sedan hall. The third one was the main hall “Jade Swallow Hall”, which is 16.3 meters in width and in five compartments that three of them were bright and 2 of them dim. There are galleries in front and at back. From entrance to rear the Hall is 9.1 meters long. The Zhang’s Mansion was renowned for its long history and the characteristics of water town dwellings that “palanquins entered through the gate and ships rowed along one’s home”. It was restored to the original style after several renovations in recent years.
