Shi Jian Tang Hall is located at 12 Pagoda Street, Zhenze Town, Wujiang City. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China in 2006.
Shi Jian Tang Hall, built in the third year of Tongzhi (1864) Period in Qing Dynasty, is the hall for Xu family, a distinguished family in Zhenze Town, and its owner is Xu Rufu. The ancestor of Xu family is the descendant of King Yan, who was the leader of Xu or Rong tribe in the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 B.C) or the Spring and Autumn Period(770-476 B.C.), and the northeast of Anhui Province and the area that Huaihe River passed by today were under his regime.
Shi Jian Tang Hall, composed of 150 houses big and small, covers an area of 2,746.54 square meters and has architecture area of 3,534.10 square meters. It is an ancient architectural complex of Jiangnan civilian houses, which include streets along the river, warehouses, stores, streets, halls, inner chambers and servant’s rooms. Houses are built in the streets and streets are included in houses. The regular layouts of the medial axis and the delicate cluster of buildings reflect the underlying trend of “doing business in stores close to houses” of the waterside business gentlemen in late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It was opened to the public tentatively in April 2004.
