The Mansion for the Runner-up, or the Former Residence of Yang Yuanfeng, is located in the North Street, Tianzhuang Village, Fenghuang Town, Zhangjiagang City. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China in 2013.
In Qing dynasty, when Qian Long was the emperor, it was first built by Yang Yuanfeng. During the years of Xian Feng, his great-grandson Yang Sisun won the second place at the palace exam, and there were four flags inserted in front of the residence; therefore, local people called it the mansion for the runner-up. The Yang family was originally a notable family in Changshu (Tianzhuang Village belongs to Changshu before) and full of talents. The mansion went through several restorations with several offspring of Yang family and has a history of more than 200 years. Parts of buildings in the early Qing dynasty have been remained till now, besides, there were also buildings in the middle and late Qing dynasty. It was in a relative higher standard and belongs to the typical private residence for officials.
The mansion seated in the west and faced to the east, there have been five yards with houses and rooms, and now four yards remained. It was 49.3 meters in width and 16.2 meters in depth. Besides, there were also water docks, outlet for animal’s head on the sewer and parts of relics of the walls. Protective maintenance for the entire mansion which mainly focused on the great hall was finished in 2004.
