Gengle Garden is located in Lujiadai Village (Xiliuxu), Shangyuan Street, Tongli Town, Wujiang City. The east-facing garden was built along a river. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China in 2013.
Zhu Xiang, who was also known by his style name Ting Rui and the pseudonym Gengle, did not like to be an official in the Ming Dynasty and thus resigned and lived secluded in Tongli. The time when Gengle Garden was first built was not recorded and the garden was changed of owners for several times. The existing building was established when Qianlong and Xianfeng were the emperors in Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of 4,000 square meters with houses in front and courtyard at back. The houses in front are composed of an entrance hall, the front and the rear chambers, and in the courtyard there are sceneries like lotus pond. It is in a ruined state because it has been out of repair for many years. It was repaired comprehensively and has been enlarged between 1998 and 2001.
