Taicang Shipping Warehouse Site, latitude 31°26 '2.5 "north and longitude 121°07′21.1〞east, lies in the middle part between South Renmin Road and South Taiping Road in Nanjiao District of Chengxiang Town, Taicang City, Suzhou. The Site, endowed with abundant water source, is intersected with a network of rivers and creeks. On the south there is a river called the old Liu River, north the new Liu River and west the Iron and Salt Pond. An orchard occupies the north part of the Site, the original Nanjiao Town the southwest part and some residential communities on the eastern part. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China in 2013.
The whole site takes the form of a terrace, 0.5 -1.5 meters higher than the surroundings. The rectangular site occupies a total area of about 200,000 square meters. The northwest corner and the southeast corner are clearly in right angle while the southwest corner is in arc shape, which is where the old river course lies; the northeast corner is occupied by a residential community called Juyuan. The basic shape of the site is still obvious. A large number of porcelain pieces and broken tiles of Yuan and Ming Dynasty were unearthed here.
The Shipping Warehouse, built in the Yuan Dynasty and expanded in the Ming Dynasty, was used to store grains collected from regions South of the lower reaches of Yangtze River, which would then be shipped to the capital city of the country or Liaodong area for military supplies. In the tenth year of the Tongzhi Period of Ming Dynasty, the warehouse was turned into a military drill ground, which was abandoned later. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was level up to serve as a farm. Experts believe that Taicang Shipping Warehouse is the national food storage site for the Yuan Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty. So far, it is the largest food storage site known of Yuan and Ming Dynasty.
