Tomb of Gu Yanwu is located in South Street, Qiandeng Town of Kunshan City. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China in 2013.
Gu Yanwu (1613-1682), calling himself Jiang Shanyong, are called by other scholars the Gentleman of Tinglin. He was from Qiandeng Town in Kunshan city and was an outstanding thinker and patriotic scholar in the transitional period from Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. When he was a teenager, he participated in the Society of Classical Learning Restoration to fight against eunuch monopolizing power. He was the author of Daily Understanding, Merits and Drawbacks of All the Provinces and Counties in China, The Collected Poems and Essays of Tinglin and so on.
The Tomb of Gu Yanwu was rebuilt in the twentieth year of Emperor Guangxu (1894) and again in the third year of Republic of China (1914). The cemetery covers an area of 50 mus(a unit of area in ancient China). The tombstone is engraved “Tomb for Gu Tinglin and his mother Wang Shuoren”. In front of the tomb, there is an arch erected by his mother to show her Chasity and piety. The tobm is surrounded by short walls. South of the tomb is Tinglin Ancestral Temple and further south the Sishi Pavilion. In 1966 the tomb was severely damaged and after three times repairs in 1984, 1987 and 2000, now it has been restored. The packed earth around the tomb mound is 2 meters high, protected with stone edge. In front of the tomb is a monument of "Gu Tinglin". The tomb is built with granite and enclosed by stone rails and there are stone steps in the middle section. At the back of tomb, more than 10 cypress trees which were originally planted there still remained. The Tinglin Ancestral Temple in the south of the tomb forms an independent courtyard, with three rooms in front, two wing-rooms and one gateway. Inside the temple displays the statue of Gu Yanwu and the historical and cultural relics related to him.
